Frequently Asked Questions
What is Vis?
Vis is a pleasant-tasting, clear, colorless, all natural, pre-surgery drink mix designed to reduce surgical complications and improve recovery. It contains 15 key ingredients, including vitamins, minerals, and complex carbohydrates, that help prepare your body for surgery.
- Vis is formulated to support the body's response to surgery, especially for high-risk patients.
- Vis is safe to consume before procedures due to its clear, colorless nature. Colored dyes in your system can interfere with the safety of your procedure.
Vis complies with guidelines from the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) and the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Society which endorse carbohydrate-rich drinks before surgery.

Is Vis gluten-free, dairy-free, or vegan?
Vis has no artificial flavors, colors, or added sugars. It is made with pure, clean, all-natural, high-quality ingredients that comprehensively support the body during the perioperative process. By doing so, the risk of infection is lowered, blood sugar levels are kept within therapeutic range, and the microbiome is protected leading to fewer complications, shorter hospital stays, and fewer readmissions.
VIS is gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan. It is manufactured and packaged in FDA, GMP certified facilities.
Are there any side effects of taking Vis?
Vis is generally well-tolerated with no side effects; however, patients with kidney or liver failure should not use it. Patients on some medications (such as certain blood pressure medications) should consult their doctors to ensure Vis is appropriate to take.
Is Vis safe to use with anesthesia and other medications?
Dr. Marx has thoroughly researched every ingredient in Vis to ensure there are no negative interactions with anesthesia, antibiotics, or most medications commonly administered before surgery. However, Vis may not be suitable for patients taking certain blood pressure medications, which should be evaluated by a doctor. Talk to your doctor about taking Vis.
How do I take Vis?
Vis comes in two convenient, pre-measured packets. Each packet is mixed in 8 ounces of water or juice to dissolve its content thoroughly. Vis is pleasant tasting, mild, and won’t cause any gastric issues. Drink one glass with the first packet just before bedtime the evening before surgery and a second glass with the other packet two hours before surgery the next morning.
Is Vis safe to drink two hours before surgery?
Taking Vis two hours before surgery is considered safe. There are no hard-to-digest ingredients such as protein or fat. All ingredients pass through the stomach prior to the start of surgery which reduces any risk of pulmonary aspiration during surgery. Vis complies with the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) guidelines and the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Society recommendations for non-emergency surgeries.
Why isn’t fasting before surgery good for the body?
A 12-hour fast before surgery, traditionally done to reduce the risk of aspiration (inhaling stomach contents into the lungs), is no longer considered the best approach for all patients. Depriving the body of essential nutrients and hydration just before surgery actually puts you at risk for worse outcomes. This outdated process often results in hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), electrolyte imbalance anxiety, dehydration, postoperative nausea and vomiting, and other complications that could have been prevented such as UTIs, pneumonia, and surgical site infections.
What if I forgot to take my dose the night before?
You can take both doses mixed in 16 oz of water the morning of surgery at least two hours prior surgery.
What if my doctor doesn't want me to take them the morning of surgery?
You can take both doses the day before the first at noon and the second the night prior to surgery.
What is the surgical stress response?
When the body experiences major trauma, such as surgery, it triggers a stress response that depletes vital nutrients and sequesters others, increasing the risk of infection, tissue oxidation, and degeneration. Surgical site infections are the most common complication, raising the risk of death by 42%. For diabetics, the risk of death is five times higher following a surgical site infection. Providing critical nutrients during the perioperative period helps manage this stress response and reduces the likelihood of poor outcomes.
How does Vis help my body handle the stress of surgery and improve recovery?
During surgery, blood glucose and cortisol levels naturally rise, increasing the risk of infection and other complications. Surgery also disrupts the gastrointestinal system reducing the body’s ability to absorb nutrients and impairing the immune system. Vis helps regulate this response providing the body with metabolic support. It stabilizes blood sugar levels and minimizes muscle breakdown. It also prevents insulin resistance, which often follows surgery, by promoting glucose availability and energy for cells. Vis not only improves patient comfort by reducing hunger and thirst but, also contributes to faster recovery and reduced postoperative complications.
Vis contains specific ingredients that should help manage the body's inflammatory response, promoting quicker and more effective recovery. By protecting the microbiome, it improves the absorption of critical nutrients upregulating the immune system. It also provides the nutrients the body needs to start the healing process and heal wounds faster. Finally, Vis should reduce post-surgical nausea and vomiting.
Does Vis help prevent brain fog and post-surgery dementia due to the anesthesia?
Vis contains a specific ingredient that protects protein folding in the brain, which may help reduce the risk of developing delirium and dementia after surgery, especially in elderly patients. It also includes six minerals crucial for short-term memory and a plant derivative that supports brain health.
Why should I choose Vis over other pre-surgery drinks?
Unlike other products, Vis focuses on the cellular stress response rather than just the macronutrient level. Its carefully calibrated ingredients avoid blood glucose and cortisol spikes and target specific areas of the surgical response, such as brain health and post-surgical dementia prevention. Other products contain ingredients that could cause stomach upset, provoke an allergic response, and potentially cause bleeding during surgery.
How can I buy Vis?
While you can purchase Vis on your own without a prescription*, Vis should be taken under medical supervision to ensure it is suitable for your specific medical conditions. Your doctor should evaluate its use for your surgery before purchasing Vis to ensure it is safe for you.
Has Vis been clinically tested?
Yes, Vis has undergone clinical trials to ensure its safety and to ensure it clears the gastric system within two hours.
Dr. Marx intends to test Vis in future trials on its effectiveness in reducing post-surgical infections, post-operative cognitive decline (POCD), and hospital readmissions.
